The Kansas City Gaelic Athletic Club (KCGAC) was founded on March 30, 2008, by a group of 12 Gaelic games enthusiasts during a meeting at Redemptorist Church. Originally focused solely on Gaelic football, the founders deliberately chose the broader name “Gaelic Athletic Club” rather than “Football Club” to leave the door open for future expansion into other Gaelic sports, such as hurling, which the club started shortly after its founding. The club held its inaugural practice just one week later at Southwest High School.
Nicknamed the Wolfhounds, the club quickly grew in both size and scope. Practices moved to Swope Park, and the KCGAC began fielding competitive travel teams, organizing local pub leagues, and hosting tournaments and exhibition matches throughout the Kansas City area. Over the years, the club has represented the city in Gaelic Football and Hurling at national tournaments across the United States, including appearances in Seattle, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Chicago.
A major milestone came in 2016, when the Wolfhounds were crowned USGAA Junior D National Champions, defeating the Tacoma Rangers 2-14 to 1-3 on September 4 in Seattle.
Today, the Kansas City Gaelic Athletic Club continues to grow and welcomes new athletes, supporters, and partners as it works to promote Gaelic games and Irish culture in the Midwest.
