Kansas City Gaelic Athletic Club

The Kansas City Gaelic Athletic Club (KCGAC) is a non-profit club and community that strives to promote Ireland’s national sports of Gaelic Football and Hurling. The KCGAC is a member of the Heartland Division of USGAA, competing in regional and national tournaments throughout the year.

What is Gaelic Football?

Gaelic Football is one of the national sports of Ireland with its first identifiable roots taking shape in the 1600s, though various forms have been played for over 700 years, and was first codified in 1887. This sport is played with a ball slightly smaller and heavier than a soccer ball with no other equipment required. This sport incorporates skills used in soccer, basketball and volleyball.

What is Hurling?

Hurling is another national sport of Ireland and has ancient roots that date back more than 3,000 years. This sport uses a baseball-like ball called a sliotar with each player using a stick called a hurley. As the fastest game on grass, Hurling has incorporated skills that are used in lacrosse, field hockey and baseball.

Gaelic Football and Hurling both are free-flowing sports like soccer with minimal stoppages for scores, fouls, substitutions, etc. They are both played on a grass field slightly larger than a soccer field with soccer goals sitting underneath uprights at each end. Teams score one point by getting the ball between the uprights and 3 points for scoring in the goal. Score is kept by Goals-Points; a team with 3 goals and 15 points would be scored as 3-15, with a total score of 24. Regulation games consist of two halves of 35 minutes with each team fielding 15 players at a time, including a goalkeeper. The team with the most total points wins.
